Overview
The Level 4 Award in Advanced Fire Risk Assessment provides a nationally recognised qualification for those working the fire risk assessment industry, and who work predominately in high-risk buildings. This qualification is based on the skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in BS 8674 Built Environment - Framework for Competence of Individual Fire Risk Assessors - Code of Practice
The aims of this qualification are:
• To enable those working as fire risk assessors, in premises identified as high risk; to demonstrate their competency.
• To provide a mechanism for individuals working as independent fire risk assessors, in premises identified as high risk; to demonstrate they meet the skills and knowledge requirements set out in BS 8674.
• To enable those working in the fire risk assessment industry to develop and demonstrate their skills.
A high-risk building may be:
• A residential building, where the occupants number more than 50, including those who may be unfamiliar with the layout of the building, or who have impairments that may impact their ability to escape.
• A retail or commercial building that meets one or more of the following:
o Is occupied by more than 100 members of staff and the public.
o Is involved in healthcare activities.
o Has particular heritage properties.
o Has more than 7 stories above ground level.
o Has occupied basement levels with no direct egress to ground level.
o Has abnormal or transient hazards.
o Is more than 600 square metres.
o Has internal travel distances of more than 60 metres.
o Has single stairways.
o Has complicated exit arrangements.
o Has combustible or unknown cladding.
o Lacks active fire protection or other fire mitigating measures.
Who can take this Course?
The pre-requisite of attending this conversion course is that learners must have completed either the ABBE Level 4 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment or a Level 3 Fire Risk Assessment course with Vraxis.
This qualification is specifically designed to enable learners to demonstrate their ability to undertake fire risk assessments in high-risk premises.
This qualification is suitable for both in-house Fire Risk Assessors and independent consultants.
How will I complete this qualification?
Face to Face (Classroom)
You can attend one of our face-to-face training sessions in Horsham, West Sussex.
This course is delivered over 2 days which is then followed up by the completion of an online assignment pack and the submission of evidence. submission of fire risk assessments of High-Risk Premises (including buildings over 18m in height).
Online (Microsoft Teams)
Our online sessions will run similarly to that of the classroom sessions but will be delivered via Teams.

There are no EXAMS to complete to achieve this qualification.
Course Structure
There are 11 core subjects which we will be developing knowledge on over the 2 day period
Learning Objectives
•Identify higher risk buildings
•Discuss fire spread in higher risk buildings
•Apply existing knowledge to developed ALARP conversation
•Specify how ventilation requirements can be met
•Analyse Evacuation strategy requirements and extensions to travel distances and escape width calculations
•Discuss Fire Engineering principles and compartmentation in higher risk buildings
•Explain various fire safety related legislative requirements in High Rise (Residential) Blocks
•Identify typical external wall systems and their potential contribution to fire
•State expectations for an advanced Fire Risk Management system
•Describe the purpose and contents of Fire strategies
•Explore BS8674’s expectations for leadership, mentoring, and sector contribution
